Dear TIPS Member,
In June 2024, Transparency International published a report assessing the effectiveness of national integrity systems in the Western Balkans and Türkiye. This included an examination of the effectiveness of key institutions, mechanisms, and actors involved in preventing and combating corruption.
Key strengths identified included improved legal and institutional frameworks, increased participation by civil society and the media in their role as anticorruption watchdogs, and increased international support and cooperation. Key weaknesses included political influence undermining the independence and effectiveness of judicial systems. Weak implementation and enforcement of anti-corruption legislation, and challenges for civil society and media such as limited funding and intimidation.
The report recommends strengthening judicial independence, enhancing transparency in public procurement, supporting civil society and media freedoms, and implementing comprehensive anti-corruption reforms to improve integrity systems in the Western Balkans and Türkiye.
Please see below the TIPS Newsletter for June 2024. We look forward to seeing you soon.
